Rafi: Good morning, madam. May I ask you something about the library? Librarian: Good morning. Of course. Are you a new member? Rafi: I joined last year, but I have never borrowed anything. I only come here to sit and study. Librarian: That is a pity. The reading room is the smaller half of a library. What do you like to read? Rafi: That is my difficulty. I do not know. Whenever I pick up an English book I stop after four pages. Librarian: Then you are choosing the wrong books, not failing at reading. What was the last one you tried? Rafi: A novel our teacher recommended. Every sentence had three words I did not know. Librarian: Put it back. Start with something two levels easier than what you think you should be reading. If you meet more than five unknown words on a page, the book is teaching you nothing but discouragement. Rafi: I thought easy books were a waste of time. Librarian: The opposite. Fluency comes from reading a great deal easily, not a little painfully. Come, our graded readers are on the second shelf. Rafi: How many may I take? Librarian: Two at a time, for fourteen days, and you may renew once if nobody has reserved them. Bring your library card. There is a fine of two taka a day after that, though I would rather have the book back than the money. Rafi: And if I want a book you do not have? Librarian: Write it in the request register by the door. We buy new books twice a year, and the list is made from that register — so a name written there genuinely matters. Rafi: Thank you, madam. I will take two today. Librarian: Good. And come back and tell me whether you liked them.

কীভাবে লিখবেন — structure
সংলাপে নম্বর আসে **স্বাভাবিক কথোপকথনে**, তথ্যের তালিকায় নয়। এখানে কাঠামোটা লক্ষ করুন: (১) প্রশ্ন, (২) শিক্ষার্থীর **আসল সমস্যা বেরিয়ে আসা** — চার পাতার পর থেমে যাওয়া, (৩) গ্রন্থাগারিকের অপ্রত্যাশিত পরামর্শ — সহজ বই পড়ুন, (৪) নিয়মকানুন, (৫) বিদায়। **অপ্রত্যাশিত মোড়টাই** সংলাপকে জীবন্ত করে; দুজন যদি শুরু থেকেই একমত থাকে তবে ওটা রচনা, সংলাপ নয়। বাস্তব সংখ্যা দিন — দুটি বই, চৌদ্দ দিন, দুই টাকা জরিমানা; নির্দিষ্টতা ভাষার নম্বর আনে। ৮–১২টি পালা যথেষ্ট।

- Eight to twelve is a good range for a fifteen-mark answer. Fewer looks thin; many more turns into a list of one-line exchanges with no language in them.
- Should the two speakers agree?
- Not at the start. A question, a doubt or a mild disagreement gives the dialogue somewhere to go, and resolving it is what makes the ending feel earned.
- How long should the whole dialogue be?
- About 250 to 350 words. It is worth fifteen marks in the first paper, so it deserves real length, but the marks are for natural English rather than for quantity.
