Tamim: You have been on that phone for the whole break. Nahid: Have I? I only opened it to check one message. Tamim: That is what it always is. My father says our generation cannot sit still for ten minutes. Nahid: He is not entirely wrong. But the phone is not the enemy — I paid my coaching fee with it this morning and my mother speaks to my brother in Qatar on it every night. Tamim: I agree that the uses are real. It is a bank, a post office, a newspaper and a classroom in one hand. My cousin learnt graphic design from videos on a phone and now earns from it. Nahid: Then what is your complaint? Tamim: That it takes hours nobody decided to give it. I checked my screen time last week — five hours a day. That is more than I spend in school. Nahid: Five hours? Let me check mine. … Four and a half. I thought it was one. Tamim: Nobody thinks it is five. And it is not only time. I cannot read twenty pages any more without picking it up. My concentration has got worse and I know exactly why. Nahid: So what should we do — throw them away? Tamim: No, that is not realistic. Keep it out of the bedroom at night, turn off notifications for everything that is not a person, and fix hours when it stays in the bag. Nahid: Let us try it for a month and compare screen time.
