In offices and banks, records that filled whole rooms are kept in one machine, and a transaction that needed three signatures is finished in seconds. Hospitals use computers for test reports, patient records and machines that photograph the inside of the body. Our garment industry, the largest employer in the country, plans production and tracks export orders on computers, and thousands of young freelancers earn foreign currency with nothing but a laptop and an internet connection. Newspapers, films and music are all made on them. A computer, however, only does what it is told: it can calculate faster than any human but cannot decide what is worth calculating. It is a tool that multiplies the ability of the person using it, which is why learning to use one properly matters more than owning one.

কম্পিউটার এমন এক যন্ত্র, যা তথ্য জমা রাখে এবং মানুষের চেয়ে অনেক দ্রুত ও নির্ভুলভাবে তা নিয়ে কাজ করে। বাংলাদেশে এর ব্যবহার এখন জীবনের প্রায় প্রতিটি অংশে। শিক্ষায় শিক্ষার্থীরা অনলাইনে ক্লাস করে, অ্যাসাইনমেন্ট জমা দেয়, পর্দায় ভর্তি পরীক্ষা দেয়; যে ফল প্রকাশে আগে মাস লাগত তা এখন মিনিটে আসে। অফিস ও ব্যাংকে যে নথি গোটা ঘর ভরে রাখত, তা এখন একটি যন্ত্রে; তিনটি সইয়ের লেনদেন কয়েক সেকেন্ডে শেষ হয়। হাসপাতালে পরীক্ষার রিপোর্ট, রোগীর নথি ও শরীরের ভেতরের ছবি তোলার যন্ত্রে কম্পিউটার লাগে। দেশের বৃহত্তম নিয়োগকর্তা পোশাকশিল্প কম্পিউটারে উৎপাদন পরিকল্পনা ও রপ্তানি আদেশ দেখে, আর হাজারো তরুণ ফ্রিল্যান্সার কেবল একটি ল্যাপটপ ও ইন্টারনেট দিয়ে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা আয় করেন।
