Dictation Practice for English Listening
Introduction
Dictation is listening that can be marked. You play a sentence, write exactly what you heard, then compare it with the transcript — and the differences tell you something ordinary listening never does: whether you missed a word because you did not know it, or because you could not hear it. Those are different problems with different cures.
Definition
Dictation practice means transcribing a short piece of audio word for word and checking it against an accurate transcript. The transcription is not the point; the comparison is. Every difference between what you wrote and what was said is a named, fixable gap.
Bangla Explanation
Examples
- You wrote "a cuppa tea"; the transcript says "a cup of tea" — a weak form you did not recognise.আপনি লিখেছেন "a cuppa tea"; transcript-এ আছে "a cup of tea" — একটি weak form, যা চিনতে পারেননি।
- You wrote "he could of gone"; the transcript says "he could have gone" — the same weak-form gap.আপনি লিখেছেন "he could of gone"; transcript-এ "he could have gone" — একই weak-form ঘাটতি।
- You left a blank where the transcript says "exorbitant" — a vocabulary gap, not a listening one.
- You wrote "nex day"; the transcript says "next day" — a dropped consonant in fast speech.
- You wrote "thirty"; the transcript says "thirteen" — a number gap worth practising on its own.
- You wrote "he go"; the transcript says "he'd go" — the contraction was there and you did not hear it.আপনি লিখেছেন "he go"; transcript-এ "he'd go" — contraction ছিল, আপনি শোনেননি।
- A five-minute session on one clip teaches more than an hour of background listening.
Common Mistakes
Writing the sentence you think is correct instead of the sounds you actually heard.
Writing "he go" or "could of" exactly as it reached your ear.
Years of reading train you to repair a sentence silently as it arrives. A repaired sentence hides the very gap dictation exists to find, so the practice becomes copying rather than diagnosis.
Choosing audio far above your level because it feels like real practice.
Choosing a clip you already follow in outline on a first listen.
If almost nothing is recognisable there is nothing to diagnose — only a page of blanks. Difficulty should come from speed and connected speech, not from unknown subject matter.
Replaying one sentence fifteen or twenty times.
Replaying about three times, then reading the transcript.
After a few plays your ear stops receiving new information and your memory starts inventing. The transcript teaches in five seconds what a tenth replay cannot.
Doing dictation with audio that has no transcript.
Choosing material with an accurate transcript or reliable captions.
Without an answer key you cannot check anything, so the exercise becomes ordinary listening with extra writing. The comparison is the whole value.
Tips
- Five minutes daily beats an hour once a week — the ear updates through frequency, not marathons. —
- Label every difference V (unknown word), S (known word, not heard) or C (weak or linked form).
- Always listen one final time after reading the transcript — that is when your ear stores the sound. — Transcript
- Keep the same clip for a week; the second and third sessions are where the gaps close. —

Frequently Asked Questions
What is dictation practice for listening?
You transcribe a short clip word for word, then compare your version with an accurate transcript. Every difference is a diagnosis: a word you did not know, a word you know but could not hear, or a word that was there in a weak or linked form. Each kind needs a different fix.
Is dictation better than shadowing?
They do different jobs. Shadowing trains your mouth, rhythm and speed by speaking along with the audio. Dictation trains your ear and produces a list of exactly which words you lose. If you have time, dictate a clip first and then shadow the same clip.
How long should a dictation session be?
Five to ten minutes on thirty to sixty seconds of audio. That is enough for three or four sentences done properly, and short enough to repeat daily. A long session on a long clip is usually abandoned after a week.
Where can I find audio with transcripts?
Learner podcasts that publish scripts, news services with written versions of their bulletins, and videos whose captions were written by a person rather than generated automatically. Automatic captions are least accurate on fast or accented speech, which is exactly the material you are trying to check yourself against.
I understand the clip but cannot write it down. Is that a problem?
No, and it is a useful signal. It usually means you are following the gist well while the small unstressed words pass you by. Those weak forms are what dictation exposes, and they are the fastest part of listening to improve.
