IELTS Listening: Map and Diagram Questions
IELTS Listening: Map and Diagram Questions (ম্যাপ ও ডায়াগ্রাম)
Introductionভূমিকা
Ask for directions in Dhaka and you will be told to go past the mosque, turn where the tea stall is, and look for the yellow building. Landmarks, not compass points. IELTS map questions work the other way: north, south, the second turning on your left, opposite the car park. That is the real difficulty here — not the English, but a way of describing space we almost never use. Learn about twenty direction phrases and this becomes one of the cheapest sets of marks on the paper.
ঢাকায় কারও কাছে রাস্তা জিজ্ঞেস করুন — বলবে মসজিদটা পার হয়ে, চায়ের দোকানের মোড় থেকে ডানে, হলুদ বিল্ডিংটা। ল্যান্ডমার্ক, দিক নয়। IELTS-এর মানচিত্রের প্রশ্ন চলে ঠিক উল্টো পথে: north, south, the second turning on your left, opposite the car park। আসল কঠিন জিনিসটা এখানেই — ইংরেজি নয়, বরং জায়গা বর্ণনা করার এমন একটা পদ্ধতি যা আমরা প্রায় ব্যবহারই করি না। কুড়িটার মতো দিকনির্দেশক বাক্যাংশ শিখে ফেললে এটাই পুরো পত্রের সবচেয়ে সস্তা নম্বর হয়ে যায়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
In a map or diagram question you get a picture with some labels missing and a set of options — letters A–H on the map, or a word list. As the speaker walks the listener through the place, you match each name to the right spot. The answers come in the order the speaker moves, which is what makes these questions predictable.
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
**রেকর্ডিং শুরুর আগের সময়টুকুতে চারটে কাজ।** এক, **“You are here” খুঁজুন** — এটাই আপনার শুরুর বিন্দু, আর বক্তা প্রায় সবসময় এখান থেকেই হাঁটা শুরু করেন। দুই, **কম্পাসটা দেখুন** — উত্তর কোন দিকে, সেটা না জানলে “to the north of the library” কথাটা অর্থহীন। ** *গতি:* go straight ahead, follow the path, head towards, take the first/second turning, go past, cross over, go up/down the stairs, at the end of the corridor। *অবস্থান:* opposite (ঠিক উল্টো দিকে), next to (পাশে), beside, between X and Y (দুটোর মাঝে), behind, in front of, adjacent to, alongside, in the far corner, in the top left-hand corner। *দিক:* north / south / east / west, north-east, on your left as you enter, to your right, clockwise, anti-clockwise। ** এক, **সংশোধন**: “The café is on your right — sorry, that's the bookshop; the café is a bit further along.” **যন্ত্র বা প্রক্রিয়ার চিত্র হলে** শব্দগুলো একটু আলাদা: at the top / bottom, on the underside, the outer layer, is attached to, is connected to, passes through, is fed into, rotates। এখানে ক্রম বোঝাতে first, then, next, after that, finally আসে, আর ওই ক্রম ধরেই উত্তর আসে। শেষে একটা অভ্যাসের কথা: অনুশীলনের সময় শোনা শেষে **transcript খুলে দেখুন বক্তা ঠিক কোন শব্দে মোড় নিয়েছিলেন** — কয়েকবার করলেই এই প্রশ্নের ভাষা পুরোপুরি চেনা হয়ে যায়, কারণ এখানে শব্দভাণ্ডার সীমিত এবং বারবার একই ফিরে আসে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Confusing 'opposite' with 'next to'.
'Opposite' means across from; 'next to' means beside.
These two prepositions place a building in completely different spots, so mixing them loses the mark.
Writing the first direction you hear and not changing it.
Waiting for the speaker's final correction before committing.
Speakers often self-correct ('sorry, not there — the other side'); only the last version is right.
Losing your place after missing one answer.
Skipping the missed item and locking onto the next place name.
The recording plays once and never repeats, so freezing on one gap costs you several more.
Ignoring the compass or 'You are here' marker before listening.
Fixing your orientation and starting point during the preparation time.
Without knowing which way is north or where you start, 'left' and 'right' become guesses.
Tipsটিপস

- Track the speaker with your finger or pen, moving as they move through the place. — বক্তা যেমন এগোন, আঙুল বা কলম দিয়ে map-এ সেভাবে চলুন।
- Learn preposition pairs cold: opposite, next to, between, behind, in front of, at the corner. — preposition জোড়াগুলো ভালোভাবে শিখুন: opposite, next to, between, behind, in front of, at the corner।
- If you miss one, let it go instantly and catch the next place name. — একটি মিস করলে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ছেড়ে দিন এবং পরের place name ধরুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
Are IELTS map questions hard to score on?
They look intimidating but are very predictable. The answers usually come in the order shown on the map, and once you know the directions vocabulary, they can be some of your most reliable marks.
Do I need to spell the answers, or just choose a letter?
Most map tasks are matching, so you write a letter (A–H) or copy a word from a given list. Spelling matters when you must copy a labelled word, so write it exactly as printed.
The recording only plays once — what if I miss an answer?
Leave it and immediately focus on the next place name the speaker mentions. Chasing a missed answer usually causes you to miss two or three more that follow.
