This is one of the few IELTS questions where getting it wrong costs the whole fee, and every year Bangladeshi candidates get it wrong in the same three ways: booking General because a bhai said it is easier, when the university needs Academic; booking Academic for a Canadian PR file that wanted General; and — the most expensive of all — booking ordinary IELTS when a UK visa required IELTS for UKVI, which is a separate booking at an approved centre. The right answer is never a matter of opinion. It is written on the website of whoever will read your score.
IELTS-এর যে অল্প কয়েকটা সিদ্ধান্তে ভুল করলে পুরো ফি-টাই জলে যায়, এটা তার একটা — আর প্রতি বছর বাংলাদেশি পরীক্ষার্থীরা একই তিনভাবে ভুলটা করেন: “ভাই বলেছে General সহজ” শুনে General বুক করা, অথচ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় চেয়েছে Academic; কানাডার PR ফাইলের জন্য Academic দিয়ে ফেলা, যেখানে দরকার ছিল General; আর সবচেয়ে দামি ভুলটা — যুক্তরাজ্যের ভিসার জন্য সাধারণ IELTS বুক করা, যেখানে লাগত **IELTS for UKVI**, যেটা অনুমোদিত কেন্দ্রে আলাদা করে বুক করতে হয়। সঠিক উত্তরটা কখনোই মতামতের ব্যাপার নয়। ওটা লেখা আছে যিনি আপনার স্কোর পড়বেন, তাঁরই ওয়েবসাইটে।

Academic IELTS যাচাই করে ইংরেজি-মাধ্যমে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়া ও পেশাগত নিবন্ধনের প্রস্তুতি; General Training যাচাই করে অভিবাসন ও বেশিরভাগ চাকরির জন্য দৈনন্দিন ও কর্মক্ষেত্রের ইংরেজি। Listening আর Speaking দুটোতেই অক্ষরে অক্ষরে একই পরীক্ষা। বদলায় শুধু Reading আর Writing — আর Writing-এ কেবল Task 1।

**ঠিক কী বদলায়, আর কী বদলায় না।** *একই:* Listening (চার অংশ, ৪০ প্রশ্ন) আর Speaking (তিন অংশ, ১১–১৪ মিনিট) — দুই সংস্করণে হুবহু এক। *Reading আলাদা:* Academic-এ তিনটি লম্বা passage, বই, জার্নাল ও পত্রিকা থেকে নেওয়া, বিষয় প্রায়ই বিজ্ঞান বা ইতিহাস; General-এ শুরুতে বিজ্ঞাপন, নোটিশ ও সময়সূচির মতো ছোট লেখা, তারপর কর্মক্ষেত্রের কাগজ, আর শেষে একটি লম্বা সাধারণ লেখা। *Writing Task 1 আলাদা:* Academic-এ গ্রাফ, চার্ট, ছক, মানচিত্র বা প্রক্রিয়ার চিত্র বর্ণনা; General-এ একটি চিঠি — formal, semi-formal বা informal। *Task 2 প্রায় এক:* দুটোতেই ২৫০ শব্দের রচনা, তবে General-এর বিষয় সাধারণত একটু বেশি দৈনন্দিন। **“General সহজ” — কথাটা অর্ধেক সত্যি, আর অর্ধেকটা খরচের।** লেখাগুলো সত্যিই সহজ, কিন্তু ঠিক সেই কারণেই **একই ব্যান্ড পেতে General Training Reading-এ Academic-এর চেয়ে বেশি সঠিক উত্তর লাগে**। অর্থাৎ সহজ প্রশ্ন মানে বেশি নম্বর নয়, মানে ভুলের জায়গা কম। আর General-এর চিঠি লেখা আলাদা একটা দক্ষতা — তিন রকম আনুষ্ঠানিকতার পার্থক্য, সম্বোধন ও সমাপ্তির জোড়া মেলানো, আর প্রশ্নে দেওয়া তিনটি bullet-এর প্রতিটি ছোঁয়া। বাংলাদেশি পরীক্ষার্থীর এখানে বাড়তি একটা ফাঁদ আছে: স্কুলে শেখা দরখাস্তের ভাষা — “I beg to state”, “Yours obediently”, “Kindly do the needful” — General Task 1-এর চিঠিতে টেনে আনা। এটা এখানকার রীতি, কিন্তু IELTS-এর চিঠিতে বেমানান, আর Lexical Resource-এ নম্বর কাটে। **কোনটা কার লাগে — বাংলাদেশের বাস্তব ছবি।** *Academic:* বিদেশে ব্যাচেলর, মাস্টার্স বা পিএইচডি; আর পেশাগত নিবন্ধন — যেমন যুক্তরাজ্যে নার্স বা চিকিৎসক হিসেবে নিবন্ধন, প্রকৌশলী বা হিসাববিদদের কিছু সংস্থা। *General Training:* কানাডা বা অস্ট্রেলিয়ার স্থায়ী বসবাসের আবেদন, পারিবারিক অভিবাসন, আর অনেক দেশের কাজের ভিসা। *আলাদা করে মনে রাখার মতো:* যুক্তরাজ্যের বহু ভিসা-শ্রেণিতে লাগে **IELTS for UKVI** — পরীক্ষাটা একই, কিন্তু নিবন্ধনটা আলাদা এবং কেন্দ্রকে অনুমোদিত হতে হয়; সাধারণ IELTS দিয়ে ফেললে সেই স্কোর ভিসার কাজে লাগে না। বাংলাদেশ থেকে যুক্তরাজ্যে যাওয়ার আবেদন করলে এটা বুক করার আগেই মিলিয়ে নিন। **সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার নিয়মটা এক লাইনের:** পরামর্শ নয়, **যে প্রতিষ্ঠানে স্কোর জমা দেবেন তাদের নিজের ওয়েবসাইটের ভর্তি বা ভিসা-শর্তের পাতা খুলে পড়ুন**, আর সেখানে Academic না General লেখা আছে সেটাই বুক করুন। একাধিক জায়গায় আবেদন করলে সবচেয়ে কড়া শর্তটা মেনে চলুন — সাধারণত সেটাই Academic, কারণ Academic-এর স্কোর যেখানে General চাওয়া হয় সেখানেও প্রায়ই গ্রহণ করা হয়, কিন্তু উল্টোটা হয় না। আর প্রস্তুতির সময় মনে রাখবেন, দুই সংস্করণের অর্ধেকটাই এক — তাই Listening আর Speaking-এর অনুশীলন কোনোভাবেই নষ্ট যায় না।

Booking General Training to apply to a university.
Booking Academic for university admission.
Universities require the Academic module; a General Training result is usually not accepted for study.
Assuming General Training letters need the same style every time.
Matching the tone to the reader — formal, semi-formal or informal.
General Task 1 letters are scored partly on using the right register for the situation and recipient.
Preparing for Academic Task 1 graphs when you need a General letter.
Practising the Task 1 type that matches your test.
The two Task 1 formats are completely different, so practising the wrong one wastes preparation time.
Thinking General Training is so easy it needs no preparation.
Preparing properly even though the texts are simpler.
General is scored on a slightly stricter Reading scale, so careless preparation still costs marks.
