Woodcut and wood engraving are two names for the same technique.→A woodcut is cut with knives and gouges into the side grain of a plank, which limits how fine the lines can be. A wood engraving is cut with a fine burin into the end grain of a hard block, which is what allowed the hair-thin lines in nineteenth-century book illustrations.
