A common mistake

Welding is only bright, so dark sunglasses are enough to watch it.→An arc puts out ultraviolet strong enough to burn the surface of the eye, and the burn does not hurt at the time — the pain arrives some hours later, like sand under the lids. Sunglasses do not filter it. A shaded welding mask does, and so does a screen around the work, because anyone standing nearby is exposed too.
