The walima is the wedding ceremony, so it can be translated as 'the wedding'.→The marriage itself is the nikah — the contract. The walima is the feast the groom's side hosts afterwards to announce the marriage publicly, so the English that fits is 'wedding reception', not 'wedding'. In Bangladesh this reception is usually called the বউভাত.

বিয়ে সম্পন্ন হয় আকদ বা নিকাহে; ওয়ালিমা তার পরের ভোজ, যা বরপক্ষ আয়োজন করে এবং যার উদ্দেশ্য বিয়েটি সবাইকে জানানো। বাংলাদেশে এই ভোজই বউভাত নামে পরিচিত। ইংরেজিতে লিখতে গেলে wedding নয়, reception বলাই সঠিক — নইলে পাঠক ভাববেন বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠান দুইবার হয়েছে। বানানে walima ও waleemah দুটিই চলে।
