A common mistake

Most of the stars you can see at night died long ago; you are looking at ghosts.→It is a lovely idea and it is largely untrue. Almost every star visible to the naked eye lies within a few thousand light years, and stars live for millions or billions of years — so the light is old, but the star is nearly always still there. The thought holds for distant galaxies, not for the familiar night sky.

খালি চোখে দেখা তারাগুলোর প্রায় সবই আমাদের ছায়াপথের কাছাকাছি অংশে — বেশিরভাগ কয়েকশো থেকে কয়েক হাজার আলোকবর্ষ দূরে। অন্যদিকে একটি সাধারণ তারা বাঁচে কোটি কোটি বছর। তাই আলো রওনা দেওয়ার পর কয়েক হাজার বছরে তার মরে যাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা অত্যন্ত কম। কথাটি সত্যি হয় দূরের ছায়াপথ বা টেলিস্কোপে দেখা অতি দূরবর্তী বস্তুর ক্ষেত্রে।
