A common mistake

The sitar's long ringing sound comes from an echo chamber inside the gourd.→It comes from strings nobody touches. Beneath the frets runs a second set of thin sympathetic strings, tuned to the scale, and they vibrate on their own whenever the note they are tuned to is played above them — that shimmer under the melody is the instrument's signature.

সেতারের নিচে তরফ বা অনুরণনশীল তারগুলো বাজানো হয় না; সেগুলো রাগের স্বরে বাঁধা থাকে এবং উপরের তারে সেই স্বর বাজলে নিজে থেকেই কেঁপে ওঠে। ফলে প্রতিটি স্বরের সঙ্গে একটি ঝিলিক-ধ্বনি মিশে যায় এবং শব্দ দীর্ঘক্ষণ রেশ রেখে যায়। বাঁকা পর্দাগুলোও একটি কারণেই — তার টেনে এক স্বর থেকে অন্য স্বরে মীড় দেওয়ার সুযোগ থাকে।
