Music can only be written down in Western staff notation.→Every serious tradition has built its own. Bengali songs are recorded in স্বরলিপি, using the sa-re-ga-ma syllables — the system in which Tagore's songs were preserved and by which they are still taught — and staff notation is one method among several rather than the method.
