Mnemonic starts with an m sound, as it is spelt.→The m is silent: it is said ni-MON-ik. The spelling keeps a Greek beginning that English stopped pronouncing, exactly as it does in mnemonics and in pneumonia — a word about memory that is itself hard to remember.
