Metadata is harmless — it is not the content, only information about it.→It is often the more revealing half. Who called whom, at what time, from where, how often — none of that is the content of a conversation, and all of it can map a person's life. A photograph shared from a phone can carry the exact place it was taken unless the metadata is removed first.
