A common mistake

Saying someone is 'playing the martyr' means calling them heroic.→It is a mild criticism, and a quite separate use of the word — it describes a person making a display of their own suffering to attract sympathy. The grave sense, of someone who dies for a belief or a cause, is not in play at all.
