A common mistake

The litigants are the lawyers arguing the case.→They are the people whose case it is — the one suing and the one being sued. The lawyers are counsel, advocates or attorneys, and they appear for the litigants. In a report, calling the barristers the litigants reverses who stands to lose.

litigant মানে মামলার পক্ষ — বাদী ও বিবাদী, অর্থাৎ যাদের স্বার্থ নিয়ে মামলা। আইনজীবীদের বলা হয় counsel, advocate বা attorney; তাঁরা পক্ষের হয়ে আদালতে দাঁড়ান, নিজেরা পক্ষ নন। সংবাদ বা প্রতিবেদনে দুটি গুলিয়ে ফেললে কার কী হারানোর আছে সেটিই উল্টে যায়। বিশেষণ litigious-এর অর্থ আবার আলাদা: কথায় কথায় মামলা করার প্রবণতা।
