A common mistake

The aurora is sunlight reflecting off the ice at the poles.→Nothing is reflected. Charged particles streaming from the sun are steered by the earth's magnetic field towards the poles, where they strike gases high in the atmosphere and make them glow — oxygen green and red, nitrogen blue and violet. It is the same effect as a neon sign, on the scale of the sky.
