Nadia: Hello, Tania. What are you reading so seriously? Tania: Hello, Nadia. An English newspaper. I have decided to read one every day. Nadia: Why? We already study English at school and I find it difficult enough there. Tania: That is exactly why. School English is for the examination. I want the kind I can actually use. Nadia: But we live in Bangladesh and everyone here speaks Bangla. Where would I use it? Tania: In more places than you think. Almost every good job asks for it — banks, NGOs, airlines, the whole IT sector. My cousin lost a job last year because he could not answer the interview in English. Nadia: I did not know that. Tania: And it is not only jobs. Every university admission test has an English section. Most of what is written on the internet is in English, so a person who cannot read it is cut off from half of what is known. Nadia: You are right. But how do I improve? Grammar rules never stay in my head. Tania: Stop starting with grammar. Read something you enjoy for fifteen minutes a day, note new words with their Bangla meaning, and speak a little even if you make mistakes. Nadia: I am afraid people will laugh at my pronunciation. নাদিয়া জানতে চায় তানিয়া এত মনোযোগ দিয়ে কী পড়ছে। তানিয়া বলে, ইংরেজি পত্রিকা — সে প্রতিদিন একটা পড়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। নাদিয়া বলে, স্কুলেই তো ইংরেজি পড়ি, আর সেটাই যথেষ্ট কঠিন। তানিয়া বলে, ঠিক সেজন্যই: স্কুলের ইংরেজি পরীক্ষার জন্য, সে চায় ব্যবহারযোগ্য ইংরেজি। নাদিয়া প্রশ্ন করে, বাংলাদেশে থেকে কোথায় লাগবে। তানিয়া উদাহরণ দেয় — ব্যাংক, এনজিও, এয়ারলাইন্স, আইটি খাত; তার চাচাতো ভাই ইংরেজিতে সাক্ষাৎকার দিতে না পারায় চাকরি হারিয়েছে। এছাড়া প্রতিটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি পরীক্ষায় ইংরেজি অংশ থাকে, আর ইন্টারনেটের বেশিরভাগ লেখাই ইংরেজিতে। কীভাবে উন্নতি করবে জানতে চাইলে তানিয়া বলে — ব্যাকরণ দিয়ে শুরু করা বন্ধ করো, প্রতিদিন পনেরো মিনিট পছন্দের কিছু পড়ো, নতুন শব্দ বাংলা অর্থসহ লিখে রাখো, আর ভুল হলেও বলো।
